Santa Maria do Olival became closely associated with the Templars and later the Order of Christ. Gualdim Pais was buried here, linking the church to the military order’s leadership rather than to the castle alone.

In the age of Portuguese overseas expansion, the church gained jurisdictional importance connected with territories administered by the Order of Christ. That made a modest-looking building part of a global ecclesiastical network.

A popular claim speaks of a secret tunnel between church and castle. That is a local legend and should be treated as such; the documented institutional connection between the two sites is already historically significant without an underground passage.
