The church of São João Baptista anchors Praça da República, where Tomar’s main urban axes meet. Its late Gothic and Manueline features belong to the period when royal investment was reshaping both the convent on the hill and the town below.
The church served ordinary parish life, unlike the specialized military-religious world of the Order of Christ. That distinction matters: most residents were not knights or monks. They baptized children, married, traded and buried family through institutions rooted in the town itself.
